Two Solitudes Part III

In the first of the posts on the Canadian novel Two Solitudes I highlighted the new edition from McGill-Queen's University Press. McGill holds Hugh MacLennan's archives, including this correspondence between him and Margaret Paull about Wm. Collins Sons & Co. Canada's paperback editions of two of his novels.

Did Collins eventually cut 39 pages? A quick comparison of the two editions shows that the foreword and chapter 39 are missing. But these are 3 or 4 pages. Only a close reading will establish if more is cut. The Collins's edition is 320 pages, the maximum they published in this series.

Sadly here are the last five of 67 covers that Margaret Paull signed for the White Circle imprint published by Toronto's Wm. Collins Sons & Co. Canada. Miss Paull usually had a clear signature so any of her covers without one likely had it left behind when the art was framed for the cover.

By this time she had taken on responsibility for producing the White Circle line and stopped doing covers.

Where Did The White Circles Come From? Part II

Wm. Collins Sons & Co. Canada Ltd. published 429 titles in their White Circle imprint from 1942 to 1952. Ten were paperback originals. Some three-quarters of the reprints were originally published by the Scottish-English parent company Wm. Collins Sons & Co. Ltd. The rest came from over 40 publishers. The second most reprinted publisher was the American Duell, Sloan and Pearce with 17. Here are the first six. The first two White Circles are 1943, the next two 1944 and the last two 1945 and 1946.

The first four parts of the Margaret Paull post presented the first 24 of the 67 signed covers that Margaret Paull did for the White Circle imprint published by Wm. Collins Sons & Co. Canada Ltd. Here are five more from 1944 plus one of her dust jackets for a Collins's hard cover published in 1948.

Typically the cover artist in not identified on the hard cover, The Aging Nymph by A. J. Elliott. Paull is identified as the artist in an article in Quill & Quire (May 1949, p. 17) about the First Annual Exhibition of Canadian Advertising and Editorial Art. Her book is one of three on display.
