Wm. Collins's Indian Editions Part III

It's been a while since Part II of this blog's Wm. Collins's Indian White Circles.

The reason isn't laziness but lack of material. But I now have a new Indian White Circle. This is an uncommon non-fiction White Circle that had been successfully published in the US (1941), UK (1942), and Canada (1946). The Indian edition is, to my knowledge, the only early paperback version. It was published in 1946 in Bombay by W.A.R. Collins.

I wonder what an Indian audience in 1946 thought of salmon fishing in Canada.

Wm. Collins's Ceylon Editions Part II

Another of the Ceylonese White Circles from the Scottish-British publisher Wm. Collins Sons & Co. This one is joined by the Indian and Canadian editions. The Indian and Ceylonese editions are undated but circa 1945.

Wm. Collins's Indian Editions Part II

The Scottish-British publisher Wm. Collins Sons & Co. published paperbacks in the 1940s and 1950s in a number of countries, including India. The Indian editions were unnumbered and came in different series. Here are two examples. Never a Dull Moment is digest sized (12.5cm x 18.3cm) and has a dustjacket glued at the spine over blank white covers. The Body in the Library is mass market sized. Both are published by W.A.R. Collins, the first in Calcutta (1946), the second in Bombay (undated).

Export News Stand Library US Series Part X

For me the most appealing feature of the 28 book US series from Toronto's Export Publishing Enterprises is the dust jacketed books. In earlier posts I've shown 19 of the 20 DJ books plus examples from non-Canadian publishers.

The books are uncommon, even rare. But which is the least, most uncommon? I'd say Jesse James is the least, Sin for Your Supper the most. I have two copies of Jesse, there have been two for sale on ABE for years from the same dealer and two copies have shown up on eBay in the last few months. I have a copy of Sin but I know of one collector who has been looking for 30 years.

Joining these books is a 1946 digest sized paperback "cheap edition" from the Scottish/British firm Wm. Collins & Sons and Co. Indian subsidiary. This has a dust jacket glued on at the spine covering blank card stock with the illustration from the original edition published in 1944.

Collins White Circle Indian Editions Part I

Wm. Collins Sons & Co. Ltd. published approximately 825 books in their White Circle paperback imprint from 1936 until 1959 in Britain. They also published White Circles in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ceylon and India. In this post I'm going to talk about the Indian editions.

I have four Indian editions:
Death before Honour by David Hume - cover identical with the Canadian edition - White Circle 107 published in 1943.
And three by Nicholas Blake (pseudonym for Cecil Day-Lewis):
Malice in Wonderland
The Beast Must Die
A Question of Proof

The first two Nicholas Blake books have an illustration used in many British and Australian White Circle editions. The source for the cover to A Question of Proof is not known. None of the books have a date. Two are printed and published in Bombay and two in Madras. They sold for 14 annas. Sixteen annas equaled 1 rupee and 1 rupee equaled 1 shilling six pence.

How many other editions are there?
