Collins White Circle Authors Part IX

Part IX of this post will discuss three more of the 78 authors who had a single book published by Wm. Collins Sons & Co. Canada Ltd in their White Circle imprint. 

The Square of Many Colours was first published in 1948 (London: Wm. Collins). I can find nothing about the author other than she did write other romance novels.

The Case of William Smith was published in 1948 (Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott). Patricia Wentworth is a pseudonym for Dora Amy Elles. Elles (1878 - 1961) wrote a series of 32 crime novels featuring Miss Silver, the first of which was published in 1928, and the last of which was published in the year of her death. She published over 40 other novels.

Margaret Elizabeth Sangster was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1894 and died in Valatie, New York, October 1981. Sangster was a writer who began as a columnist and journalist, became an editor and novelist, and wrote poems, articles, short fiction stories, in addition to numerous radio and television scripts. She was named for her prominent grandmother, Margaret Elizabeth (Munson) Sangster (1838-1912), an inspirational writer and poet in the Victorian era. Surgical Call was first published in 1937 (Philadelphia: The Blakiston Company).

Collins White Circle Artists Part XIX - York Wilson (3)

As I detailed in part I York Wilson's work for Wm. Collins & Sons Canada Co. Ltd's White Circle imprint in the mid 1940s is unsigned but there is documentary evidence for seven covers. In part II I discussed four of eight other covers that I believe he did. Here are the next four. All are 1945.

Collins White Circle Artists Part XVIII - John Fernie (5)

In the first four parts to my John Fernie post I showed 21 of his covers for William Collins Sons & Co. Canada Ltd's White Circle imprint from 1948 until 1951. Since the last part one more cover has shown up. Here it is plus my favourites from the other 21. As I said in my first post Fernie's covers were among the best of the White Circles. I can extend that and include all mid century paperbacks. The new one is Golden Future by Lyndon Snow from 1951.

Collins White Circle Artists Part XVII - Margaret Paull (6)

The first five parts of the Margaret Paull series showed the first 29 of 67 signed covers Paull did for Wm. Collins Sons & Co. Canada Ltd's White Circle imprint. Here are the next six. The first two were published in 1944, the last four in 1945.

Export's Unnumbered and Missing Books

In an earlier post I described six books from Export Publishing Enterprises Ltd. that had duplicate numbers - News Stand Library 150, 151 and 152. Here are two books from Export with no numbers and four books that don't exist.

The four books that don't exist are 96, 97, 98 and 99 in Export's main Canadian NSL series. Eight books were published each month in September through November 1949 and January 1950, with Let out the Beast (95) the last book in January. The next book is Tomcat in Tights (100) dated March 1950, then Racket Boss (101) dated February. By April's Pick-up (102) the books are back on schedule with either four or five published each month. The last four books in January (92-95) were also published in the Export US Series (15A-18A).

The two books without numbers are The Door Between and The Governor's Mistress. They were also published with numbers 21A and 22A (both February 1950) respectively in the US Series. The only difference between the states of each book is the spine where the number and distributor code (KN) is missing. There is speculation that the unnumbered versions were to be two of the four missing numbers in the Canadian series.
